Classical History Introduction (ChRistory)
The partnership between our faith in God and the story of humanity
is essential in teaching our children to value the perspective that
Christianity has always offered a way of understanding the relationships
between God, the world, and mankind. Trained adult volunteers
(along with teenage assistants) will be leading an introduction to
classical and Biblically based history from the period of the ancients
to modern times.

Why History?
Everything we want to teach happened in history! It’s
not just a collection of dates, events, and revolutions – it’s
the story of God revealing Himself to mankind. In Deuteronomy 6:20-25,
God reveals that understanding how he is working through history needs
to be understood:
In the future, when your son asks you, "What is the meaning of the
stipulations, decrees and laws the Lord our God has commanded you?" tell
him: "We were slaves of Pharaoh in Egypt, but the Lord brought us
out of Egypt with a mighty hand. Before our eyes the Lord sent miraculous
signs and wonders--great and terrible--upon Egypt and Pharaoh and his
whole household. But he brought us out from there to bring us in and give
us the land that he promised on oath to our forefathers. The Lord commanded
us to obey all these decrees and to fear the Lord our God, so that we
might always prosper and be kept alive, as is the case today. And if we
are careful to obey all this law before the Lord our God, as he has commanded
us, that will be our righteousness."
Teaching history from a biblical perspective gives a worldview context
for latter years of learning, and will combat the removal of Christian
content from secular history curriculums.
What will be used to teach history?
We
will be using the history timeline Flashcards from Veritas Press (by
Marlin & Laurie Detweiler). This curriculum chronologically weaves world
cultures and stories of the past
alongside the
events of the Bible. Our curriculum is structured to follow
a popular classical approach to learning.
How much history do I need to know?
We understand that placing this
level of importance on history is probably new to you, and that there
may not be much you remember about history from your own time in school.
The curriculum that we selected (The Mystery of History) was specifically
designed for families to be able to study history together with little
to no prior knowledge. A trained volunteer will lead you and your child(ren)
through the lessons, and you will have the opportunity to explore the
topics at home as time permits.
